Master dies were produced bearing both the H and KN mintmarks for use at either mint. Each mint was required to remove the other's mintmark before striking, but this was not always meticulously practiced, often resulting in either a wide-spaced K N with a weak H between, or a well-struck H flanked by a weaker K and N. In this example all three letters are of equal prominence.
