Auction news

B. Frank & Son’s 93rd Numismatic Auction Sale was held at the Royal Station Hotel in Newcastle on 6th June, and many thanks are proffered for yet another successful event.
The usual wide variety of material was on offer, from banknotes to coins, tokens & medallions, medals and militaria, books, bonds, shares & other scripophily and all sections of the sale performed admirably amid keen bidding on the floor and live via the internet from all corners of the globe.
Highlights included four Celtic gold staters of the Corieltauvi, all ex-Driffield hoard, including an inscribed issue of Volisios Dumnovellaunos, which realised £828.55 including 13.5 % buyer’s premium, and three uninscribed types selling for £385, £403 & £431 respectively, including buyer’s premium.
Among the Medals and Militaria, a very nice group of 4, including Egypt Medal (undated), with QSA, bars Transvaal & Laing’s Neck, KSA, bars South Africa 1901 & 1902 and Khedive’s Star achieved a hammer price of £275 (£312 with buyer’s premium), while, surprisingly, a superb Military Medal awarded to Lance Corporal H.C. Joyce, 18/K.R.R.C., died 28th March 1918 during the German offensive at the Battle of Arras on the Somme, failed to reach what was a very modest reserve.
